A Jigsaw of Grace – Part 3: Faith Through the Storm

When Elaine gave her life to Jesus, it wasn't the end of her story. In many ways, it was only the beginning.

As her faith grew, so did her desire to serve God. Redcar Baptist Church quickly became much more than the place where she had first encountered Jesus. It became her church family. She threw herself into church life, joining Bible studies, building friendships and serving wherever she could. Music became an important part of her worship, and she found great joy in singing God's praises alongside other believers.

Looking back, Elaine can see how much she was growing in her relationship with Christ. She had discovered the peace and assurance that came from knowing Him personally, but she was also about to discover something else: following Jesus does not mean life will always be easy.

When Faith Is Tested

Like many couples, Elaine and Terry longed to grow their family. The years that followed, however, brought both great joy and deep sorrow. Pregnancy was accompanied by serious medical complications, loss and uncertainty. They faced experiences that no family would ever choose, and there were times when the future seemed frighteningly unclear.

Yet as Elaine reflects on those years, she doesn't focus first on the pain.

She remembers God's faithfulness.

She remembers the prayers of her church family, the kindness of friends, and the quiet assurance that she and Terry were not facing those difficult days alone. God's presence did not remove the suffering, but it sustained them through it.

God's Presence in the Darkness

One of the most significant chapters in Elaine's testimony centres on the birth of her twin daughters, Catherine and Rosanna.

The weeks that followed brought both immense love and profound heartbreak. Catherine's life was very short, and saying goodbye to her remains one of the deepest sorrows Elaine has ever experienced.

There are no easy words that can explain moments like these, but there are moments when God reveals His grace in extraordinary ways.

Looking back, Elaine sees how faithfully God surrounded them with love through family, friends, medical staff and their church community. Even in grief, they experienced His presence.

One particular memory remains especially precious.

Reflecting on that difficult time, Elaine writes:

"It's a lovely testimony to think that our little girl brought her daddy to Jesus."

During those days, Terry's own journey of faith became deeply personal. Watching Elaine's trust in Christ, and experiencing God's love through the people around them, led him to place his own faith in Jesus.

What seemed like the darkest chapter of their lives became part of another story that only God could write.

Holding On to Hope

The years that followed were not without further challenges. There were more disappointments, more uncertainty and more occasions when Elaine found herself depending completely on God.

Yet there were also moments of wonderful joy.

The birth of James was one of those moments.

After everything they had experienced, holding a healthy baby in her arms was an answer to many prayers and a reminder that God's goodness had never left them.

Looking back now, Elaine doesn't pretend that every question has been answered or that every experience has been easy to understand. Instead, she speaks honestly about the difference Jesus has made throughout it all.

She writes:

"I know now, looking back, that because of the kind of person I am, I probably wouldn't have coped with all this without having God in my life to help me."

It is a simple sentence, but perhaps it says more than any long explanation ever could.

Looking Back

When Elaine first met Betty as a seventeen-year-old office junior, she had no idea that God was beginning a work in her life.

At the time, Betty's friendship was just that—a friendship.

The invitation to church was simply an invitation.

The Christians she met during her travels were just people crossing her path.

The prayer she whispered in a small church in New Zealand seemed to disappear into the silence.

Years later, she realised none of those moments had been random.

God had been patiently drawing her to Himself all along.

As Elaine reflects:

"During our travels we met various people who were Christians. It didn't mean anything to me at the time, but now, when I look back, I can see it was like a jigsaw puzzle being put together."

That image of the jigsaw beautifully captures her testimony.

Some pieces brought joy.

Some brought sorrow.

Some didn't seem to fit at the time.

But together they reveal a picture of a God who never stopped loving, guiding and sustaining her.

Elaine's story reminds us that becoming a Christian doesn't mean the road ahead will always be smooth. It does mean that whatever lies ahead, we never walk it alone.

The God who patiently revealed Himself to Elaine continues to meet people today with the same love, grace and faithfulness.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your faithfulness through every season of life. Thank You that You never promise a life free from difficulty, but You do promise never to leave us or forsake us.

Thank You for Elaine's testimony, and for the way it reminds us that You are always at work, even when we cannot yet see the whole picture. Thank You for walking with her through times of joy and times of sorrow, revealing again and again that Your grace is sufficient.

We pray for those who are reading this today. For anyone carrying grief, uncertainty or unanswered questions, may they know the comfort of Your presence and the hope that is found in Jesus Christ. Help us to trust You with the pieces of our own lives that we do not yet understand, knowing that one day we too will see more clearly the story You have been writing.

Strengthen our faith, deepen our hope and help us to walk closely with You each day.
