“I Heard a Voice Say, ‘Wake Up’” – Pele’s Baptism Story

On Sunday 10th May, our church family gathered to celebrate a special day of baptisms and dedication. Among those taking the step of baptism was Pele, whose journey to faith is a powerful testimony of God’s grace, presence, and faithfulness.

Pele has lived in Dormanstown for most of his life. Although faith was not something he had previously pursued, a deeply personal experience years ago began to change everything.

After being diagnosed with stage 2 cancer, Pele found himself facing some of the darkest moments of his life. Struggling with the weight of the diagnosis and unable to share the news with his family, he reached a point of despair. It was in that moment, he says, that everything changed.

“I heard a voice say, ‘Wake up. Get up. You’ll be fine.’ It wasn’t frightening or booming—it was calm. But it woke me up. Ever since then, things have been different.”

For Pele, that experience sparked a growing awareness that God was real and present. What began as curiosity gradually became faith. He started reading the Bible, asking questions, attending church, and later joined the Alpha Course to explore Christianity more deeply.

“I never thought I’d do something like this,” he said of his baptism. “But I knew I was ready.”

Baptism was something Pele had hoped to do last year, but when his cancer returned, treatment had to take priority. Once he was able to move forward, he was determined to take this next step in his faith journey.

When asked what baptism meant to him personally, his answer was simple and heartfelt.

“It makes me feel closer to God. I feel part of the family now.”

That sense of belonging has been one of the most meaningful aspects of church life for Pele. He spoke warmly about the friendships he has found and the welcome he has received.

“This place is amazing. Everybody knows me, and we have such a laugh together. It feels like our own little family.”

One of the highlights of the day was seeing family and friends come along to support him. Some were surprised by his decision to be baptised, but they were encouraged by what they experienced.

Making the occasion even more special, Pele was baptised by his niece, Sarah, who joined him in the baptistry pool for this significant moment. For Pele, having someone so close to him take part in his baptism made the day all the more meaningful and memorable.

As he reflected on what he is most thankful to God for today, his answer carried deep significance.

“Probably being here. Because I wouldn’t have been.”

Pele continues to learn, grow, and discover more about God each day. His story is a reminder that God meets people in unexpected places, speaks into the darkest circumstances, and lovingly draws people to Himself.

We are so grateful to celebrate this important step with Pele and the others who were baptised on the day. It was a joy to witness their public declaration of faith and to welcome them as they continue to follow Jesus.

Lord Jesus, thank You for the joy of celebrating baptisms and dedication together as a church family.

Thank You for Pele and each person who took the step of baptism, publicly declaring their faith and choosing to follow You. We pray that they would continue to grow in confidence, joy, and closeness with You each day, knowing Your guidance, peace, and strength in every season of life.

We also pray for the child dedicated and for their family, asking that Your hand would be upon them as they grow surrounded by love, faith, and encouragement.

And Lord, for those who may be considering baptism or exploring faith for themselves, would You continue to draw them near to You. Give them courage to take their next step and remind them that Your grace is always reaching out in love.

May our church continue to be a place where lives are transformed, faith is nurtured, and people encounter the hope of Jesus.

Amen.
